Impact of Hurricane Katrina

Remembering Katrina bells

Our mission -- "Kingsley House educates children, strengthens families and builds community" -- remains even more vital in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Since the storms, over 30,000 infants, children, youth, parents, disabled and elderly adults from 12 parishes throughout Southeast Louisiana participated in our nationally accredited and state certified programs. Our approach during this recent crisis is much like our approach has always been: person centered, community based and mission focused.

Kingsley House sustained over $3.5 million in damages to our historic facility due to Hurricane Katrina. Initially, 30% of essential staff were retained to assist the agency in its immediate recovery. Many staff have been re-hired as our programs have developed and expanded in response to the ever evolving needs of the metropolitan area. In fact, we now have nearly 25% more staff than we did before the storm.

Due to the extraordinary generosity of countless local, statewide, national and international supporters, Kingsley House has been able to provide much needed mental health counseling and supportive services for families experiencing high levels of trauma and stress. Many of the comprehensive services and programs that Kingsley House provided prior to the hurricanes are needed even more now by displaced and returning residents throughout the greater New Orleans area. Kingsley House began the region's very first Resettlement and Recovery Center post-Katrina and has been helping thousands of children and families in their efforts to recover, rebuild and heal.
