In 2017, Kingsley House joined United Way’s network of free tax preparation services offered by volunteers, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA provides IRS-trained and certified volunteers to complete federal and state tax returns free-of-charge for people earning $54,000 or less.
In the two years that Kingsley House has participated as a VITA tax site, our incredible VITA volunteers have filed electronic tax returns for hundreds of people, both Kingsley House participants and from the community-at-large.
“All of our volunteers are rock stars and one in particular, Mrs. Lanoke Cross, truly embraced Kingsley House’s strategic priority to help eradicate poverty in the community,” said Terrell Haynes, Community and Supportive Services Program Director. “In her second year as a VITA volunteer Mrs. Cross has not only left an indelible impression on the staff, but returning members of the community often requested her for tax assistance.”
Mrs. Cross traveled from LaPlace, Louisiana almost daily to Kingsley House’s campus in the Lower Garden District throughout tax season, from February 3 – April 17, demonstrating a commitment to bring this valuable service to families in the community.
Haynes went on to note, “Our incredible team of committed volunteers made it possible to file 288 returns for the 2017 tax year free-of-charge totaling $387,928.00 in federal returns, and $35,956.00 in state filings. Because taxpayers were able to keep 100% of their returns, many had an opportunity to contribute to a savings plan, make investments in their children’s education fund, or pay down debt — all important steps to establishing financial stability.”
