Let me tell you about my father, Marques Celestine, Sr. He was a U.S. veteran who traveled the world but always had a soft spot for his home in New Orleans. He worked for 32 years at the U.S. Post office and always had a side job or business to provide for me and my mom, who was diagnosed with MS the year I was born. He was always there for me. He was my dad, my provider, my mentor and my hero.
Imagine my devastation in 2009 when he was diagnosed with dementia. I knew I needed help for my dad but was not sure where to go, so for a while, I would take him to work with me. It was important for me to be with my dad all the time, so I knew he was ok. I wanted to be there for him the same way he was for me all my life. It was my wife who made me realize he needed something more than just following me around every day. We started looking into Adult Day Healthcare facilities and had been everywhere in the city. It was hard to find a place that was affordable and made us feel safe. I didn’t need a place where they would babysit my dad. I needed a place where my dad would be loved and nurtured. We were so thankful the day we found Kingsley House.
Kingsley House’s Adult Day Healthcare staff treated my dad like their own family. His health was monitored daily by their nursing team, a nutritionist and chef provided healthy meals and snacks, and he participated in daily activities and field trips. Staff even let him help them and assigned him certain tasks to make him feel useful and engaged as a team member. For a man who worked and felt needed his entire life, this was a crucial component to his success at Kingsley House. Kingsley House gave my dad a reason to get up every morning and gave me the peace of mind to continue my job and provide for my family.
Because of Kingsley House’s program and supporters like you…
…my dad was on this earth a little longer;
…I had the availability in my schedule to pick up my daughter from school every day; and
…I never had to miss one of her field trips.
Because of you, I was the kind of father my dad was to me.
I am writing today to encourage you to make a contribution to Kingsley House and continue to support families like mine. All gifts received by June 30, 2018 will be matched up to $50,000!
The time to give is now. Will you make a generous gift today to support Kingsley House?
Marques Celestine, Jr.
